“Overtones and Glottis Attack”
In an intuitive and physical way, Janneke van der Putten explores her voice as a sound texture. She has specialized in extended vocal techniques, producing two or more sounds simultaneously: basic tones, harmonics, interferences – like glottic attacks – and spatial reflections. Van der Putten uses architecture as a natural sound amplifier and as a trigger for echoes or other sonic effects. Wandering in space makes the sound move and generates a dynamic listening experience. Her rhythmic and conceptual approach to singing is inspired by the cycles of the breath, the body and the earth. Her performances are often performed without electrical amplification. In this way, she focuses on the exploration of space itself: how it sounds, whether it is lit or not, and where the audience is located.
Janneke van der Putten (Amsterdam, 1985) is a visual artist and vocalist based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. She presented her work in Europe, South-America and in the African continent at the Lagos Biennale, 2021, and at Institut Français de Mauritanie, 2022. Solo exhibitions include: All Begins With A, TENT (Rotterdam, 2015), Directed to the Sun, Atelierhaus Quartier am Hafen (Cologne, 2017), Quitsa, CINNNAMON (Rotterdam, 2017), and duo-show [to], Kunstraum 34 (Stuttgart, 2020). Van der Putten was artist-in-residence at amongst others the Centre international d’art et du paysage (Île de Vassivière, 2014), Haute école des beaux-arts du Rhin (Mulhouse/Strasbourg, 2019–2020), and was awarded a fellowship at Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart, 2019). She has lead her performance workshop ‘Textile and Voice in the Landscape’ at the 45th National Salon of Colombia (Bogota, 2019) and her research ‘Geo-astronomical Relations: the Moon and the River as our Elements’ at ArtEz (Arnhem, 2020). Her work has been supported by Mondriaan Fund and CBK Rotterdam/Centre for Visual Arts Rotterdam. In 2016 van der Putten founded Idraola and initiated the Aloardi Exchange Programme, inviting Peruvian artists to present their work in the Schengen Area.
Her solo debut album ‘JNNK’ will be released on the June 21st Solstice 2023. Her previous album was made together with Sajjra Xhrs Galarreta (PE) for their project ‘Invisible Architecture’ (Aloardi, 2015). She completed her MMus in Artistic Research, Royal Academy of Art & Royal Conservatoire (The Hague, 2011 – 2013) and graduated with a BDes from TXT (Textile), Gerrit Rietveld Academy (Amsterdam, 2003 – 2009).
